New publication on system protection

Resistive superconducting fault current limiters (RSFCL) are a promising solution for the protection of medium- and high-voltage DC and AC power links. They are particularly needed if superconducting power cables are integrated into the DC grid to ease the design requirements of the electrical system.

Within the SCARLET project, this solution is studied for the protection strategy of 1 GW offshore wind power export systems employing MVDC superconducting cables operating at 50 kV DC.

In a newly published IEEE article on RSFCL, the authors from SuperGrid Institute and RSE selected a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape with suitable properties and designed the RSFCL with an adequate number of parallel tapes wound in bifilar pancake coils.

The results provide valuable insights into RSFCL material selection, device architecture, and manufacturing considerations for the next-generation power systems.

The article is available here and on Zenodo.
