New SCARLET publication

What if we could significantly simplify offshore wind farms by directly producing MVDC export voltages and connecting the farms to the grid via MVDC high-power superconducting cables? In doing so, we could eliminate the need for the conversion function in offshore platforms!

In the current issue of the IEEE journal Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, Christophe Creusot and his fellow authors have written an instructive article entitled “Superconducting cable modelling into electro-magnetic transient simulation tool”. The paper presents the case of a 1 GW offshore superconducting link and outlines the design considerations for a 1 GW onshore converter. A protection strategy that combines DC circuit breakers with a Resistive Superconducting Fault Current Limiter is proposed for this cable.

This work shows how a superconducting cable can be modelled as an electrical circuit to be integrated into a network simulation tool, enabling the investigation of various fault scenarios and protection strategies. The proposed approach can benefit the design of both the electrical network and the superconducting cable itself.

The paper is available on Zenodo.
