Op-ed on innovation for power transmission
In a recent article published in Tagesspiegel Background Energie & Klima, John Fitzgerald – CEO of SCARLET partner SuperNode Ltd – discussed novel cable technologies to make the German transmission grid fit for a decarbonised future.
He emphasized the need for innovation-friendly regulation to trigger the necessary investments in novel cable technologies such as superconductors. With their high transmission capacity and lower demand for raw material, superconductors offer a promising solution that can complement conventional technologies moving forward. To fully utilise these novel technologies, we need regulatory instruments enabling pilot and demonstration projects.
In a nutshell, he states that “the transformation of the electricity system requires a higher level of innovation and a broadening of the technological toolkit of grid operators.”
