SCARLET presented at SATES 2023
SCARLET researchers Christian-Eric Bruzek from ASG Superconductors and Nicolas Lallouet from Nexans France presented the project at the international Symposium on Advanced Technologies in Electrical Systems (SATES) that took place in Arras, France on the 22nd-23rd of March 2023.
SCARLET was represented both in the Electrical Grid Reliability & Resiliency session and the Electrical Energy Efficiency session. In the former, Nicolas Lallouet presented the general features of HTS-based superconducting MVDC cables for bulk power transmission over kilometric lengths. The SCARLET project was emphasized especially for its design and development of export HTS technology for offshore applications in WP3.
In the latter session, the focus was set on the MgB2-based superconducting MVDC cable in liquid hydrogen that will be demonstrated in WP4, underlining the timeliness of this unique solution to simultaneously transmit the two energy vectors electricity and hydrogen. First, the benefits of this approach were highlighted for green transportation systems and energy-intensive industries, where high amounts of both electrical and chemical energy are required. Then, the various grid architectures and possible cable designs for different applications were shown and discussed along with the current status of the demonstration project.
In the general context of sustainable development and strategic resiliency, the SATES meeting covered new usages of electricity and renewable energy resources, from circular economy to safety & security of electrical supply chains. The objective was to connect researchers from industry and academia to encourage them to work together on common themes. All TRL levels were addressed at the symposium. The contributions and feedback received will be used to facilitate discussion on common issues at all levels of maturity and development.
