WP4 highlighted at cryogenic conference
At the recent ICEC30 / ICMC2026 in Daejeon, South Korea, liquid hydrogen emerged as one of the hottest topics throughout the conference. Matteo Tropeano’s presentation entitled “MgB2 Solutions for Power Cables and SMES in Energy Systems” attracted significant interest through its innovative approach of combining advanced cryogenic technologies with superconducting power transmission.
Beyond SCARLET’s core objectives, the presentation highlighted a broader range of liquid hydrogen applications, including port infrastructures and cold ironing systems, where superconducting technologies could play a key role in enabling efficient and sustainable shore-to-ship power supply.
What makes this particularly fascinating is that many of these liquid hydrogen applications were already being discussed in a visionary way in the early 2000s, shortly after the discovery of MgB2 superconductivity. More than two decades later, thanks to advances in cryogenics, superconducting materials, and hydrogen technologies, those forward-looking concepts are steadily moving closer to practical implementation – also thanks to the advancement work achieved in SCARLET.
